Nigeria

Boko Haram fighters raided a prison in the town of Bauchi, freeing more than 800 inmates, including 200 Boko Haram members. Upwards of 50 Boko Haram members stormed the prison armed with AK-47s and killed four people, including two bodyguards, and wounded four others. Thirteen people have been arrested in connection with the raid.


Pakistan

The US killed 18 Taliban and Haqqani Network fighters in three Predator strikes in North Waziristan. The Taliban killed a police official and a policeman in bombings in Hangu, and bombed a girls’ school in Kalam. Pakistan will charge three men for supporting the Taliban’s failed Times Square bombing in New York City.





Iraq

Insurgents killed four policemen and four civilians in attacks in Baghdad, Kirkuk, and Tikrit. The Hezbollah Brigades is responsible for the spike in attacks in Thi Qhar province. Security forces detained 16 wanted men in Basrah.

Afghanistan

A suicide bomber killed three people in Baghlan. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south. Coalition and Afghan forces detained several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters during raids in Zabul, Helmand, Khost, Paktia, and Kunduz. Al Qaeda is reportedly disarming Haqqani Network leaders in Kunduz.



Uganda

Sheikh Fua™d Mohamed Khalaf, a senior Shabaab leader who is from Saudi Arabia, threatened to carry out more attacks in Kampala if Uganda deploys more troops to Somalia. Uganda recently sent 750 additional soldiers to Mogadishu.



Somalia

Fifteen people were killed in fighting between Shabaab and government and African Union forces in Mogadishu; Shabaab claimed it killed 10 soldiers and took control of a region in the north. Shabaab also closed down 10 healthcare centers in the Bakool and Juba regions.


Al Qaeda in Iraq

Al Qaeda in Iraq has demanded local shopkeepers in Mosul pay “protection money” to ensure shipments of goods. “Many shopkeepers have been threatened and are paying up,” the governor of Ninewa province said.





Iran

South Korea imposed new sanctions on Iran. Beijing urged Tehran to cooperate with the IAEA. Cuban President Fidel Castro criticized President Ahmadinejad’s anti-Seminism.
