Coalition and Afghan forces killed 23 Taliban fighters in Helmand and three more in Wardak, and detained a Haqqani Network sub-commander and several fighters in Khost. The Afghan central bank took control of the failing Kabul Bank.


Nigeria

Authorities arrested 10 Boko Haram members in Maiduguri who were involved in the killing of nine police officers and officials. Two men linked to the Boko Haram jailbreak attack have been arrested. One hundred and twenty prisoners who fled during the Bauchi jailbreak have returned voluntarily to their cells.

Pakistan – Minister blames ‘terrorists’ for attacks on Christians


Iraq

Eleven al Qaeda fighters were killed and 32 more were captured during fighting in Hadid in Diyala on Sept. 12. Security forces detained a “terror” cell leader in Karbala, and 14 wanted men in Diwaniyah and Diyala. Insurgents assassinated an intelligence colonel and a police officer in Baghdad.

Yemen

A gas pipeline was bombed in Shabwa province, a known al Qaeda haven. Yemen will begin the trial of four al Qaeda operatives next week; a German is among the four. The US may file terrorism charges against al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula leader Anwar al Awlaki.

The IAEA named a new nuclear inspector for Iran. Ayatollah Khamenei issued a fatwa to kill those who burn the Koran. Tehran criticized a $60 billion US arms deal to Saudi Arabia. The Iranian diplomat who resigned is seeking political asylum in Finland.
