Uganda

A pair of bombings killed 64 people at restaurants in the capital of Kampala. The blasts took place as soccer fans were watching the World Cup final match. Shabaab is strongly suspected of carrying out the attacks; the al Qaeda-linked Somali group threatened attacks in Uganda last week.


Pakistan

Security forces killed 22 Taliban fighters in airstrikes in Arakzai, and detained 50 Taliban fighters in Nowshera and 20 members of the Punjabi Taliban in southern Punjub. The Taliban killed a soldier in an IED attack in Khyber. A leader of the anti-Taliban Awami National Party was killed in Buner.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has given France a 15-day extension to exchange prisoners, otherwise the terror group will execute the 78-year-old French national, Michel Germaneau. “The mujahedeen [holy warriors] decided to grant a final extension to France that will not be repeated and will not exceed 15 days, starting on Monday,” AQIM’s online […]


Iraq

Insurgents killed a soldier, an Awakening fighter, a tribal leader, and a spokesman for the Baghdad Provincial Council in attacks in Baghdad and Mosul. Security forces detained the mufti, or cleric, for al Qaeda’s Islamic State of Iraq during a raid in Baghdad.


Somalia

Shabaab detained more than 100 young Somalis as part of their efforts to press civilians to fight for them. Three security personnel were killed in an IED attack in Bosaso. Kenya has deployed more troops along the Somali border and has closed two crossing points.

Afghanistan

Security forces killed 23 Taliban, including a Taliban commander linked to al Qaeda, in Ghazni, Zabul and Kandahar, and detained four more in Kandahar. The Taliban killed a district governor and 14 policemen in attacks in Kunduz and Badakhshan, and an ISAF soldier in the south. Britain claimed the Taliban have gained strength in Helmand.


Yemen

Security forces detained 10 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in Hadrmout province. AQAP claimed the June 19 attack on a security headquarters in Aden that killed 11 people. A court upheld the death sentence of four AQAP operatives involved in terror attacks.


Tunisia

A Tunis court has sentenced eight men up to 12 years in prison for belong to a terrorist cell. All of the men denied the charges of inciting terror and asserted that they were tortured to induce confessions. Two were convicted in absentia after they fled to Sweden and France and claimed asylum.

Pakistani military, Taliban clash in South Waziristan

Six Pakistani soldiers were killed in Taliban attacks on security posts in the Mehsud tribal areas. The military said 38 Taliban fighters were killed in counterstrikes. Just 10 days ago, the military claimed that South Waziristan was cleared of the Taliban.

Under threat of violence, Somalians play soccer — or watch — at their peril
