Malaysia

Malaysian police arrested a suspected Jemaah Islamiyah recruiter after he returned from Thailand. Mohamad Fadzullah Abdul Razak, a 28-year-old engineer, has allegedly attempted to recruit students in his former university in the south of the country. He was arrested under the controversial Internal Security Act that permits indefinite detention without trial.


Iraq

Suicide bombers killed 43 people, including 34 Awakening and six Iraqi soldiers in Baghdad, and three Awakening fighters in Al Qaim. Security forces detained 17 al Qaeda operatives in northern Iraq, three Mahdi Army Promised Day Brigade fighters in Baghdad, and a 1920s Revolution Brigades member in Bayji.


India

Police have uncovered a network of 14 Taliban-style sharia courts in the state of Kerala that are operated by the Popular Front of India. The network is backed by Wahhabists in the Gulf. During raids, police found al Qaeda tapes, Islamist documents, and explosives.


Afghanistan

Coalition forces intercepted memos from Mullah Omar indicating he ordered attacks on civilians. A suicide bomber killed three people in Kabul. The Taliban killed a US soldier in the south. Security forces detained a Taliban facilitator, a sub-commander, and three fighters during raids in Kabul, Kandahar, and Zabul.


Philippines

The Abu Sayyaf Group has kidnapped a Japanese national in Sitio Bas in Sulu province. The 70-year old Japanese treasure hunter was abducted by 10 armed men. It is estimated that the Abu Sayyaf Group has about 400 members left on the islands, the vast majority being under 30 years old.


Algeria

Islamist terrorists killed four civilians in an IED attack near the eastern towns of Kenchela and Tebessa. Two former leaders of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Othmane Touati and Samir Moussaab, have appealed to their former comrades to give up their arms and renounce terrorism.


Iran

Iran’s parliament urged the government to continue to pursue uranium enrichment. The oil minister said Iran would begin blacklisting foreign firms. A senior Islamic Revolution Guards Corps commander said the Zahedan suicide attack was a sign of “weakness.”

Rising civilian toll ignites anger at African force as it battles Somali militants





Pakistan

The Taliban killed 18 civilians in an ambush on a convoy in Kurram. Security forces killed 18 Taliban fighters in Arakzai. Six people were wounded in two bombings in Lahore and five policemen were wounded in an IED attack in Charsadda.


Iraq

Insurgents killed four civilians in attacks in Mosul and Kirkuk. Security forces detained al Qaeda’s second in command for Diyala province and two al Qaeda operatives near Mosul. Muqtada al Sadr is visiting Syria.

Iran – Reformist opposition blames government for recent terror attacks


Somalia

Kenyan police arrested three men linked to Shabaab and thought to be involved with the suicide attacks in Uganda. The US vowed to continue to support the African Union mission in Somalia. President Sharif vowed to not let Somalia remain a safe haven for Shabaab and al Qaeda.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed five ISAF soldiers, including two Brits, in attacks in southern and eastern Afghanistan. Security forces detained several Taliban fighters during operations in Helmand and Kandahar provinces.
