Afghanistan

The Taliban executed 11 Afghans and beheaded several of them for ‘spying’ in Uruzgan, and killed three US soldiers in southern and eastern Afghanistan. Coalition and Afghan forces killed an undisclosed number of Taliban fighters and captured several more, including a Taliban sub-commander and a Haqqani Network facilitator, in Khost, Badghis, Kandahar, and Helmand.






United States

Eleven of the 17 Afghan soldiers who went AWOL from their posts at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas have turned up on Facebook. The US Congress approved new sanctions on Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and the energy sector. Tehran canceled a planned flotilla trip to the Gaza Strip.


Sweden

SAPO, the Swedish security police, detained a Somali man during a raid in the Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby. The Somali man, who has not been named, is suspected of plotting to carry out attacks in Somalia.


Somalia

Hizbul Islam claimed it defeated the forces of the pro-government forces of the Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama™a in Mogadishu. The government and Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama™a are prepared to retake control of the south from Shabaab and Hizbul Islam.


Yemen

A German and an Iraqi are among four suspects detained for the failed assassination attempt of the British ambassador in April. Security forces detained eight al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters. AL Qaeda distributed propaganda CDs at mosques in Sa’ada. The US increased humanitarian aid to Yemen.






Pakistan

Pakistani troops killed eight Taliban fighters in Arakzai. An investigation indicates police aided in the escape of four Jundallah members held in a jail in Karachi. The Taliban destroyed four NATO tankers in Peshawar.





Philippines

The Abu Sayyaf Group has killed four civilians, including two women, and wounded two others after ambushing their vehicle in the village of Maluso in Basilan province. Philippine marines killed two Abu Sayyaf fighters, and four marines were wounded in firefights at a joint camp run by MNLF and Abu Sayyaf.


Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstani intelligence officials claimed that ousted Prime Minister Bakiyev plotted with the al Qaeda-linked Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and Tajik Islamist groups to spark the ethnic violence that resulted in more than 2,000 deaths in the south. Two Bakiyev family members reportedly met with IMU leaders in Badakhshan.

Odierno to use combat lessons to develop joint doctrine


Iraq

Two suicide bombers killed an Iraqi soldier in Mosul. Insurgents killed five policemen in attacks in Mosul and Baghdad. Security forces killed a suicide bomber in Tal Afar and detained four al Qaeda fighters in the north, three Mahdi Army fighters in Baghdad, and two terrorists in Kirkuk.


Somalia

Eight people were killed in Mogadishu during clashes between Hizbul Islam and government forces. Three people were killed in an IED attack in Bosaso in Puntland. Shabaab leader Sheikh Muktar Abdirahman Abu Zubeyr released an audiotape.


Afghanistan

Coalition and Afghan forces killed 15 Taliban fighters and captured an undisclosed number more in Kandahar, and also destroyed a major IED factory in the province. Four British soldiers died in a vehicle accident in Helmand.
