Iraq

Iraqi security forces detained an al Qaeda leader and 16 fighters northwest of Baghdad and 15 wanted men in Basrah. Insurgents shot and killed a police captain in Mosul.


Somalia

Heavy fighting took place in northern Mogadishu after government and African Union forces attacked Shabaab positions. The African Union vowed to stop Shabaab from taking the presidential palace. A woman was killed in a bombing in Mogadishu.



Russia

Four people were killed in a bombing outside a community center in Stavropol where a dance company from Chechnya was performing. Security forces killed two “militants” in Chechnya.


Philippines

A grenade attack by suspected Abu Sayyaf fighters on a home in the province of Sulu has left three family members dead and three others injured. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front has replaced one of its field commanders, who is Central Mindanao’s most wanted man, only three days after replacing its spokesman.


Afghanistan

Coalition and Afghan forces killed and detained an undisclosed number of Taliban fighters in Zabul and Helmand. The Taliban killed a British soldier in Helmand and detonated a car bomb outside a Canadian base in Kandahar. The Red Cross has offered medical training to the Taliban.




Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula released a videotape showing Umar al Farouk Abdulmutallab, the failed Christmas Day airline bomber; Uthman al Ghamdi, a former detainee at Guantanamo Bay; and Fahd al Quso, an operative in the USS Cole bombing. AQAP blamed the US for conducting airstrikes in Yemen.

Pakistan

Security forces killed 12 Taliban fighters in Arakzai and detained eight Lashkar-e-Islam fighters in Khyber. The families of 130 Taliban fighters have been expelled from Swat and have been placed in government camps.


Iraq

Insurgents killed 14 people at a gold market in Baghdad and three security guards in Kirkuk and Mosul. Security forces killed one of the attackers behind the attack on the Baghdad gold market, and detained 14 wanted men in Basrah and a senior al Qaeda leader in Fallujah.



Somalia

Police vowed to attack Shabaab in the capital. Hizbul Islam detained three journalists in Afgoi. Fighters from the pro-government Ahlu Sunna Waljama™a arrived in Mogadishu to fight Shabaab and Hizbul Islam.



Afghanistan

Afghan and Coalition forces killed a “key al Qaeda leader and several other enemy fighters” during a clash in Paktia and detained an undisclosed number of Taliban fighters and facilitators in Logar, Kandahar, and Helmand. The Taliban kidnapped seven civilians in Khost and later killed five of them.
