Pentagon chief raises threat of attack as Iran taunts US with missile display

The Taliban denied reports that they would negotiate with the US and withdraw from Afghan politics. “Those who think we would leave this path of jihad are living in fool™s paradise,” spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.


Pakistan

A Taliban suicide bomber killed seven people in an attack on a police station in Kohat. Security forces killed 13 Taliban fighters in Arakzai and three more in Swat, and detained terrorists in Islamabad.


Iraq

General Ray Odierno said the US plan to reduce forces to 50,000 troops by Sept. 1 is on target. Security forces detained 10 wanted men in Basrah and a top al Qaeda fighter in Ramadi. A US soldier died in a helicopter accident in northern Iraq.


Somalia

Twenty-three people were killed in clashes between the military and Islamist groups in Mogadishu over the past two days. Two soldiers and a civilian were killed in fighting between government forces in the capital. Hizbul Islam has imposed a tax on the khat trade. Turkish naval forces detained 13 pirates.

Yemeni soldiers killed two al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters and detained another after a shootout at a checkpoint in the western province of Hudaydah. Coalition and Afghan forces killed 20 Taliban fighters in Baghlan province. The Taliban killed two Dutch Marines, an ISAF soldier, and a civilian in attacks in the south and Faryab. The Afghan government released three Italian aid workers implicated in a plot to kill the governor of Helmand.


Iran

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said the US has no policy to deal with Iran if it builds a nuclear weapon. A top general said the Iranian Army “is prepared to engage in asymmetric wars and is able to change regional equations to its benefit.”
