Philippines

The Army has sent elite, US-trained units to hunt the Abu Sayyaf fighters who launched the April 13 terror assault on the city of Isabela. Fighting broke out in the village of Tabiawan between Army and Abu Sayyaf units. Security officials believe Abu Sayyaf may carry out similar attacks, including in Manila.


Afghanistan

ISAF forces have completed the withdrawal from the Korengal Valley in Kunar province as part of “the requirements of the new population-centric counterinsurgency strategy.” Coalition and Afghan forces detained an undisclosed number of Taliban and Haqqani Network fighters in Paktia and Ghazni province.

Iran

US Secretary of Defense Gates said Iran is at least a year away from producing a nuclear weapon. The US intelligence community said Iran won’t be capable of a nuclear weapon for 3-5 years. Iranian military officials defied the clerical leadership over punishing anti-government protesters.



Pakistan

Violent protests over the renaming of the Northwest Frontier Province continue. The Taliban vowed to halt the return of the Mehsud tribe to South Waziristan and torched two NATO supply containers near Khuzdar. Two ANP leaders were killed in Swat.






Iraq

Five Iraqis were killed in bombings in Baghdad and Basrah. Security forces detained 14 wanted men in Basrah, Mosul, and Kirkuk; four al Qaeda fighters in Touz Khourmato; and a “high ranking gunman” in Fallujah. General Odierno will step down as the US Forces Iraq commander at the end of the summer.


Philippines

Abu Sayyaf killed five Philippine Marines, a policeman, and five civilians in a terror assault on the city of Isabela. Five bombs were detonated in the city. Four Abu Sayyaf fighters were captured in the counterattack.

Russia

The Islamic Emirate of the Caucasus confirmed that Anzor Astemirov, a senior military commander who is known as Amir Sayfullah, was killed by Russian security forces in the city of Nalchik in Kabardino-Balkaria on March 24. Sayfullah’s death was confirmed in a martyrdom statement released on the al Qaeda-linked Ansar Forum.

Four policemen and two soldiers were killed in an IED attack in Faryab province. Three women were killed in a Taliban mortar attack in Kapisa. Caolition and Afghan forces killed a Taliban sub-commander and two fighters, and detained six Taliban and Haqqani Network fighters in Khost, Helmand, and Kunduz. Russian President Medvedev said the US Congress’ proposals for sanctions on Iran will not receive international support. China does not back additional sanctions on Iran. Defense Minister Vahidi said Iran has plans to develop a long-range missile defense system.
