Iran

Opposition leader Mousavi said the Green Movement will persevere despite a government crackdown. Iran’s opposition is pleased with the US’ decision not to enforce sanctions on Internet sites they use for protest. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said new sanctions will not stop Iran’s nuclear program.


United States

David Headley pled guilty to scouting the city of Mumbai for the 2008 terror assault as well as plotting to kill a Danish cartoonist who drew an image of the Prophet Mohammed. Headley passed along intelligence to Lashkar-e-Taiba for the 2008 Mumbai attack that resulted in the deaths of 175 people.




Pakistan

Security forces killed six Taliban fighters and two civilians in Kohat, and detained a Taliban leader in Karachi. Two wanted Swat Taliban commanders were among five killed in a military operation. Prime Minister Gilani said the government is “not in a rush” to launch new offensives in the northwest.


Somalia

Three people were killed in fighting in Mogadishu. Shabaab detained two reporters and shut down a radio station in Bardhere. Some members of Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama’a rejected the agreement with the government. Pirates attacked a Dutch warship; the Dutch released the pirates after boarding their ships.


Iraq

Prime Minister Maliki’s State of Law party has a 39,905 vote lead over the secular Iraqi National Movement, with 89 percent of the votes counted. The final vote count is expected to be released within days. Al Qaeda in Iraq beheaded two security officials in Sharqat.

Iran

The US State Department announced that it “feels a sense of urgency” about addressing the Iranian nuclear program. President Obama stated that thwarting Iran’s nuclear program is a top priority. Tehran said it is ready for a nuclear fuel swap on its own soil, an offer which has been previously rejected by the West.

Pakistan

The US killed eight Taliban fighters in a pair of airstrikes in North Waziristan. The Taliban killed five security personnel and blew up a NATO fuel tanker in Khyber. Ten Taliban fighters and three militia fighters were killed in a clash in Kurram. A Taliban commander and 38 fighters surrendered in Bajaur.

The US killed Sadam Hussein Al Hussami, who is also known as Ghazwan al Yemeni, in an airstrike in North Waziristan on March 10. Hussami was a top operative in al Qaeda’s external operations network. He aided in the suicide attack on Combat Outpost Chapman, which killed seven CIA officials and a Jordanian intelligence officer.


Iraq

The parties of Prime Minister Maliki and former Prime Minister Allawi are in a dead heat in the parliamentary election, with more than 80 percent of the votes counted. Security forces detained seven wanted men in Basrah and two Naqshabandiya fighters in Makhmour. Insurgents killed a Christian in Mosul.
