General McChrystal placed restrictions on night raids against Taliban leaders. Coalition and Afghan forces killed a Taliban fighter and captured six more during raids in Kandahar, Khost, Paktika, and Wardak. A Taliban commander was killed in northern Helmand province on Feb. 20.





Iran

President Ahmadinejad said Iran has no use for nuclear weapons and that Iran’s “bombs” are its youths and “athletic heroes.” Iran criticized the US on new sanctions. Iran’s IAEA Ambassador Ali Asghar Soltanieh said the IAEA’s most recent report has “reopened already closed issues.”

Security forces claimed to have killed 30 Taliban fighters in air and artillery strikes after a checkpoint in Mohmand came under attack and a soldier was killed. Seven Taliban fighters were killed in Arakzai. The Army has begun to withdraw from Bajaur. A suicide bomber was killed during a premature detonation in Muzaffargarh.

Agha Jan Mohtasim, the former Finance Minister during the Taliban regime and a son-in-law of Mullah Omar, is reported to have been detained along with three associates during a raid in Karachi. Mohtasim is considered to be a candidate to replace Mullah Baradar, the leader of the Quetta Shura.

Security forces detained 10 al Qaeda fighters involved in the March 3 attack in Baqubah and four Islamic State of Iraq fighters in Kirkuk.
