Nigeria

Nigerian authorities have arrested 17 members of the Nigerian police for their extrajudicial killing of suspected Boko Haram members. The investigation into the murders was prompted by Al Jazeera’s release of footage showing police executing people suspected of being involved in the 2009 Islamist sect uprising.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Three Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb terrorists were killed by Algerian security forces during operations in Keddara in Boumerdes province. The Mauritanian government has refused to negotiate with AQIM for the release of the three Spanish aid workers.



Pakistan

Eight Taliban fighters were killed in a Pakistani airstrike in South Waziristan; locals claimed those killed were civilians. A Taliban commander was killed in a shooting in North Waziristan. The Taliban beheaded a pro-government tribal elder in Arakzai.



Iraq

Al Qaeda in Iraq failed to deter parliamentary elections. Thirty-eight Iraqis were killed in mortar attacks and bombings, but the attacks did not keep Iraqis from the polls. Turnout was high. More than 60 Taliban and HIG fighters and 20 civilians have been reported killed in inter-Taliban fighting in Baghlan; 20 HIG fighters surrendered to the government after the battle. Security forces killed seven Taliban fighters in Helmand and captured a Taliban commander in Ghazni. The Taliban killed two ISAF soldiers in the South.

Hood was “a pioneer, a trailblazer, and a role-model.”
