Police killed two suicide bombers in Helmand. Coalition and Afghan forces killed an undisclosed number of Taliban fighters, and detained two IED cell leaders and three fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Khost, and Paktika. The Taliban killed two British soldiers in an IED attack in the South and murdered a government official in Ghazni.


Iran

US officials said progress in Iran’s nuclear program has slowed, leaving room for continued pressure. Police and the Basij militia cracked down on the celebration of the “fire festival.” Iran asked OPEC to provide a $200 billion investment in its energy industry.

Nigeria

A video released at Ansar al Mujahideen forum website encouraged Nigerians to wage jihad against Christians. “The solution is jihad in the cause of Allah,” the speaker said. “Negotiations, dialogues and protests will not stop the advancement of the enemies and their massacres. Nothing will stop them but the sword and the spear.”


India

The Indian Mujahideen, a front group for the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, was behind the bombing in Pune that killed 16 people, according to India’s home minister. “The handlers are the same, the set of handlers which was involved in Mumbai,” Home Secretary Gopal Pillai said.


Iraq

Security forces detained two al Qaeda leaders, two facilitators, and explosives expert, and 15 al Qaeda fighters in Wasit, Kirkuk, Mosul, Sharqat, and Baghdad. Security forces also detained seven wanted men in Basrah and two insurgents in Tal Afar. Insurgents killed an Iraqi soldier in Mosul.
