Six Frontier Corps troops and more than 20 Taliban fighters were killed after the Taliban attacked an outpost in Khyber. Maulvi Noor Jamal, the Taliban leader in Kurram, survived an IED attack in Arakzai; four Taliban fighters were killed. The Taliban bombed a school in Arakzai.


Somalia

The government appointed a Shabaab sympathizer as envoy to the US. Shabaab reportedly sent 2,000 fighters with armored vehicles to the central town of Dhusamareb, where the pro-government militia Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama™a has imposed a curfew. Russia

Caucasus Emirate leader Doku Umarov claimed responsibility for the March 29 double suicide attack at subway stations in Moscow that killed 39 people. Umarov claimed the suicide attacks were revenge for a February raid by the FSB and said more attacks inside Russia should be expected.








Russia

A pair of suicide bombers killed 13 people, including nine policemen, in an attack in the city of Kizlyar in Dagestan. The second bomber detonated as rescue operations for the first blast were under way. The chief of police of Kizlyar was among those killed.


Afghanistan

A suicide bomber killed 13 Afghans at a market in Lashkar Gah in Helmand. Police killed two Taliban fighters and captured two more in Herat. Iran

An Iranian nuclear scientist defected to the US and has provided intelligence to the CIA. President Obama demanded a new sanctions deadline of “weeks, not months” for Iran. A US official said that “Iran is not leaving China much room to stand on.”

Nigeria

A spokesman for the radical Islamist group Boko Haram threatened to attack the US and the West. “Islam doesn’t recognize international boundaries, we will carry out our operations anywhere in the world if we can have the chance,” Musa Tanko told AFP. He also said the US “is the number one target.”






Pakistan

A US strike in North Waziristan killed six Haqqani Network fighters. Pakistani strikes in Arakzai killed 36 Taliban fighters. The Taliban torched two schools in Dir. Iranian agents freed a diplomat kidnapped in Peshawar in 2008. The UN delayed the release of the report on the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
