United States

Two men believed to have been co-conspirators in Najibullah Zazi’s plot to bomb the New York subway system have been formally indicted on those charges. Adis Medunjanin and Zarein Ahmedzay pled not guilty to conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction.


Pakistan

A Fedayeen-i-Islam commander may have been killed in a US strike in North Waziristan. Security forces captured a Taliban commander in Karachi. The Taliban bombed a NATO fuel tanker in Peshawar.


Fedayeen-i-Islam commander thought killed in US airstrike

Qari Mohammed Zafar is reported to have been killed in a recent strike outside of Miramshah. Zafar was involved in serveral major attacks in Pakistan, including the 2002 suicide attack on the US Consulate in Karachi. The US has a $5 million bounty out for Zafar.

Yemen

The government is hoping to revive tourism in the western province of Hadramaut, an al Qaeda stronghold, by providing security at tourist sites and conducting uplift programs. Houthi rebels claimed the military will not lift its siege of Sanaa.


Afghanistan

Twenty Taliban fighters and two Afghan soldiers were killed during fighting in Kunduz. The Taliban killed a British solider in Helmand. The Afghan government raised the flag over Marja. An Interior Ministry spokesman demanded Pakistan turn over Mullah Baradar, Mullah Omar’s deputy. South Korea will send 350 troops to Parwan.


Indonesia

Police detained four suspected terrorists during a raid on a training camp in the province of Aceh. More than 50 terrorists were thought to be training at the camp, which has been linked to al Qaeda affiliate Jemaah Islamiyah. Police found weapons, uniforms, and terrorist propaganda at the camp.



Iran

Tehran said the IAEA’s new report on Iran’s nuclear program is misleading and biased. A senior Russian diplomat warned the West not to enact paralyzing sanctions against Iran’s energy and banking sectors. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak pushed for “severe sanctions” on Iran, during a meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

A US airstrike in North Waziristan killed eight Haqqani Network and foreign fighters. The Taliban beheaded three “US spies” in North Waziristan. Security forces detained a Lashkar-i-Taiba leader and 34 followers in Nowshera. The Lashkar-i-Islam publicly executed a murderer in Khyber.

Insurgents killed a policeman and a woman in Mosul. Security forces detained an al Qaeda cell leader and five accomplices in Baghdad and Abu Ghraib, three Mahdi Army fighters north of Baghdad, and three wanted men near Al Kut.
