Afghanistan

President Karzai canceled a meeting with the Organization of Islamic Conference on reconciliation with the Taliban. The Taliban killed two US soldiers in an IED attack in southern Afghanistan. Coalition and Afghan forces detained a Taliban facilitator and an undisclosed number of Taliban and Haqqani Network fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Khost, and Wardak provinces.


Russia

Russia’s Federal Security Service killed Mokhmad Mohamad Shabban (AKA Saif Islam) and an associate during a raid in a mountainous region in the Republic of Dagestan. Shabban was one of the original founders of al Qaeda in the Caucasus and is said to be the mastermind of recent attacks in the region.



Algeria

Seven suspected Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb fighters were killed during clashes with security forces in the Djefia region. The fighters were killed in the town of Charek while security forces conducted anti-terror operations. More than of 50 Islamist fighters have been reported killed since December 2009.

President Ahmadinejad agreed to the IAEA’s nuclear fuel swap proposal; the US and other Western powers are skeptical of Iran’s sincerity.
