Iraq

Security forces detained 24 wanted men in Basrah, an al Qaeda commander and 20 operatives in Baghdad and northern Iraq, six terrorists in Kirkuk, and three arms dealers in Diyala. Insurgents killed a soldier in Mosul and a civilian in Fallujah.


Philippines

Abu Sayyaf kidnapped two locals working for a US-funded road construction project in the town of Maimbung in Sulu province. The Abu Sayyaf fighters have not issued any ransom demands for the release of the two workers.


United States

Somalia

Ten civilians were killed during shelling and two soldiers were killed in an IED attack in Mogadishu. Fighting between police and the military in Mogadishu resulted in four soldiers killed. Hundreds of Shabaab fighters are deploying to the capital. The African Union denied Shabaab reports that its soldiers were killed in terrorist bombings.


Afghanistan

The Afghan government will hold a Loya Jirga on the proposed reconciliation plan with the Taliban in mid-spring. Afghan and Coalition forces detained a Taliban and a Haqqani Network sub-commander during raids in Ghazni and Khost, and seized more than 800 pounds of opium in Helmand.


Taliban deny Hakeemullah is dead

Maulvi Noor Jamal, the Taliban commander reported to have replaced Hakeemullah, denied that the leader is dead and said he is not in charge. Pakistan’s interior minister claims he has “credible” information that Hakeemullah is dead.
