The death toll of yesterday™s shelling in Mogadishu reached 30. Shabaab™s new battalion, named Khalid Bin Walid, poured into Mogadishu to help counter the government offensive in the capital. Pirates freed a Taiwanese trawler used as a “mother ship” to attack other vessels during a 10-month period; three crew members did not survive captivity.
Insurgents killed a policeman and a civilian in Mosul, and an imam in Baghdad. Security forces detained 27 wanted men in Basrah, Diyala, and Kirkuk, four al Qaeda fighters in Touz Khormato, and an Islamic State of Iraq leader in Arab Jabour.
Twenty-three Taliban and allied fighters died during a cold snap in Baghlan province. Coalition and Afghan forces killed a Taliban commander and detained three more commanders and an undisclosed number of fighters during raids in Khost, Helmand, Kandahar, and Zabul. The UN believes opium production will drop this year.
The twin bombings mark the fourth major attack against security forces in Pakistan’s violent northwestern border with Afghanistan. Twelve policemen were among those killed.
