Pakistan

A US airstrike killed five Taliban fighters in North Waziristan. Security forces killed seven Taliban fighters in Bajaur and detained 20 more in Kohat and Hangu. The Taliban took credit for last week’s suicide attacks in Bannu. Three Pakistanis were killed in an explosion in Dadu in Sindh province.


Somalia

Four Shabaab fighters were killed in a blast at a health center in the Bakara Market in Mogadishu. The EU will train 2,000 Somali troops in Uganda. Iraq

Insurgents killed six Iraqis in shootings and IED attacks in Baghdad, Diyala, and Kirkuk. Security forces detained 12 wanted men in Basrah and six insurgents near Kirkuk. Iraqi officials said 145 candidates have been barred from upcoming elections due to Baathist ties.

Afghanistan

Coalition and Afghan forces killed 27 Taliban fighters during the Marja assault; 12 civilians were accidentally killed in a rocket attack. The Taliban killed two policemen and two ISAF soldiers. Security forces killed a Taliban fighter and detained a Taliban commander and another fighter in Kandahar. Five Taliban fighters surrendered their weapons in Herat.

Iran

The foreign ministry said Iran’s nuclear program has been “of a peaceful nature at all times.” The US secretary of state said Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons. The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff said an attack on Iran could have “unintended consequences.”

Pakistan

Security forces detained 11 Lashkar-i-Islam fighters in Khyber and five Taliban fighters in Darra Adam Khel. The Taliban bombed a school in Mohmand. The US delivered 115 artillery pieces to the Pakistani Army.


Yemen

An unnamed interior ministry official claimed Said al Shihri is in command of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula as Nasir al Wuhayshi died in an airstrike in December 2009. The governor of Marib denied al Qaeda controls most of the province. The government said Houthi rebels are obeying a truce.


Al Qaeda in Iraq

Abu Omar al Baghdadi, the leader of al Qaeda’s Islamic State of Iraq, threatened to conduct attacks to prevent Iraqis from voting in the upcoming parliamentary election. “We decided to prevent the elections by all possible and legitimate means, primarily, the military means,” Baghdadi said in a statement released on the Internet.

India

A bombing at the German Bakery in Mumbai killed nine people, including four foreign women, and wounded 45 more. The Jewish Chabad House, a target of the December 2008 terror assault, is across the street from the bakery. No group has taken responsibility for the attack.


Iraq

Security forces detained 18 wanted men in Basrah, five members of al Qaeda IED cells in Rashidiyah and Baqubah, two terrorists in Al Kut, and an insurgent in Mosul. Insurgents killed a civilian in Mosul. Twenty-eight candidates banned from running for office have been reinstated.
