Taliban confirm Mullah Baradar captured

Two Taliban leaders said Mullah Omar’s deputy has indeed been captured, and that it occurred not in Karachi but during the operation in Marja in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

US Secretary of State Clinton said the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps is supplanting clerical and civilian leadership in Tehran. President Ahmadinejad said that the West will “regret” any decision to move forward with further sanctions. The Foreign Ministry spokesman said Tehran fully supports nuclear disarmament in the Middle East.

India signals change of tack by agreeing to talk despite Pune


Pakistan

A US airstrike in North Waziristan killed four Taliban fighters. Security forces killed three Taliban fighters in Bajaur and detained four more during a raid on a madrassa in Shangla. General Kiyani said the military objectives have been achieved in South Waziristan.



Somalia

Four Somalis were killed in an assassination attempt against Somali’s state minister for defense in Mogadishu; a suicide bomber and two IEDs were used in the attack. Three people were killed during clashes between Islamists and government forces in Mogadishu.


Iraq

Security forces killed an al Qaeda leader and detained seven IED cell members in Baghdad and Mosul, and detained 30 wanted men in Thi Qhar, Kirkuk, and Anbar. Insurgents killed an Iraqi soldier and two civilians in attacks in Mosul.


Al Qaeda

Ilyas Kashmiri, the head of al Qaeda’s Shadow Army, threatened to attack India. “”We, the mujahideen of 313 Brigade, vow to continue attacks all across India until the Indian Army leaves Kashmir and gives the Kashmiris their right of self-determination,” he told The Asia Times.


Afghanistan

Sporadic fighting continues during the third day of fighting in Marja. The Taliban killed two British soldiers, including a counter-IED specialist, in attacks in Helmand province. Security forces detained two Taliban commanders and a fighter during separate raids in Kandahar province.

Five Sydney men have been sentenced in Australia’s longest and most high profile terror case. The sentences ranged from 23 to 28 years in prison for plotting jihad on Australian soil. The men had been stockpiling chemical explosives and other weapons to carry out the attacks.

During a visit to Doha, US Secretary of State Clinton said Iran was “drifting towards a military dictatorship.” Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu visited Moscow to garner Russia support for isolating Iran.
