Pakistan

A US strike in North Waziristan killed six Taliban fighters. Ten Taliban fighters and two soldiers were killed in fighting in North Waziristan; four more Taliban fighters were killed in Swat. Pakistani officials claimed five Taliban leaders were killed in US strikes on Jan. 15 and 17 in North Waziristan.


Iraq

Iraqi security forces detained 13 al Qaeda operatives in Baghdad and northern Iraq, 13 wanted men in Basrah, seven Promised Day Brigades members in Baghdad, and a Naqshabandiya group member south of Kirkuk. Two bombs were detonated in Mosul but no casualties were reported.

Somalia

At least six people were killed in fighting between pirates over a ransom in the coastal town of Harardere. A Puntland lawmaker was killed by a gunman in Bosaso. Hizbul Islam plans to start operating a port and an airport in the out of the capital Mogadishu.




Nigeria

Violence between Christians and Muslims has erupted in the northern Nigerian city of Jos. The death toll has reached 149 over two days as Nigeria™s vice-president, in the absence of President Yar™Adua, has ordered troops to the city to halt the violence. India

Police defused a bomb outside an Indian Oil liquefied petroleum gas bottling plant in Punjab province. Police believe a major attack was thwarted as the bomb was placed along a pipeline between the gas plant and the bottling plant. It is not known who planted the bomb.








Afghanistan

Thirteen Taliban fighters and two policemen were killed during clashes in Farah and Badghis provinces. Coalition and Afghan forces detained two Taliban commanders, a facilitator, and and six fighters in Zabul, Ghazni, and Logar provinces. US Defense Secretary Gates said reconciliation with the Taliban leadership is highly unlikely.


Iran

Iran’s opposition urged protests on Revolution Day next month. Germany warned Iran that it faces new sanctions unless the nuclear issue is resolved. A city prosecutor was assassinated in northwestern Iran.


Turkey

Turkish security forces detained 20 al Qaeda suspects in the city of Adana. More than 300 policemen searched 25 locations during the raids in Adana and seized weapons, ammunition, and computers.

Pakistan

Security forces killed 10 Taliban fighters during a clash at a checkpoint in North Waziristan and three more in Kurram, and detained seven suspected Taliban fighters in Mianwali. One member of a “peace committee” and three Taliban fighters were killed during a clash in Mohmand. The Taliban bombed a boys’ school in Khyber.




Somalia

Eleven people were killed and 10 more were injured in heavy shelling in Mogadishu. The government demanded Kenya release 16 Somali members of parliament who were detained after protests in Nairobi over the deportation of a radical cleric. Shabaab and Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula are swapping fighters.



India
