Police shot a Somali man wielding an axe and knife as he attempted to murder Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard at his home. The Somali man was linked to Shabaab and Al Qaeda in East Africa. A few years ago, Westergaard had drawn a cartoon of the prophet Mohammed with a bomb in his turban.


Yemen

Somalia-based Shabaab vowed to send fighters to Yemen to battle the US and Yemeni security forces. The US will double the $70 million in security aid to Yemen this year, according to US CENTCOM Commander General David Petraeus.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has demanded that the Spanish government pay a ransom of $7 million and release several of its members in exchange for three Spanish hostages. The Spanish government has sent medicine to AQIM to aid one of the wounded Spanish hostages who was shot in the leg during the abduction.

Philippines

A soldier providing security was wounded when a militant threw a grenade into a Roman Catholic Cathedral in Sulu province. Three civilians were wounded in a grenade attack in Kidapawan City in North Cotabato Province. Several dozen people have been killed in violence in the Southern Philippines since September, including two US Special Forces troops.


Thailand

Two soldiers and and a Buddhist civilian were killed in a drive-by shooting in Narathiwat province by militants who stole the soldiers’ assault rifles. Three other civilians were also killed in three separate shootings, including a district chief and assistant village chief.


Iran

An Afghan official said an ISAF airstrike killed seven civilians and two Taliban fighters in Helmand province. The Taliban killed a driver of a NATO supply truck and his helper in Zabul and kidnapped two French journalists. Pakistani Taliban commander Qari Hussain Mehsud took credit for the suicide attack at the CIA base in Khost.
