Iran

President Ahmadinejad purged four senior members of the Intelligence Ministry after some officials refused to back the government’s claim that the post-election protests were designed to overthrow the government. The officials also reportedly were opposed to airing confessions of protesters on TV. The former chief of the Intelligence Ministry was fired on July 26.


Kuwait

The interior ministry detained six Kuwaitis who were part of an al Qaeda-linked cell assigned to attack US forces in the country. The cell members reportedly confessed to plotting to build a truck bomb and attack Camp Arifjan, a large US logistics base south of Kuwait City.

The Taliban claimed 32 troops were killed in an ambush in North Waziristan; the military said 11 Taliban fighters were killed. The military killed four children during shelling in Khyber. Indian troops killed four terrorists as they attempted to infiltrate across the Line of Control from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. On Aug. 8, three more terrorists were killed as they attempted to infiltrate from the Pakistani zone. Nine infiltration attempts have been foiled since Aug. 1.

Twenty-three Iraqis were killed in a dual truck bomb attack in a Kurdish village outside of Mosul. Nine Iraqis were killed during seven explosions throughout Baghdad. A British security guard killed two foreigners in Baghdad. Iraqi troops detained seven wanted men in Basrah. US troops detained three al Qaeda fighters in Jalawlaa.
