Algeria

Five members of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb surrendered to authorities in Batna in northeastern Algeria. The surrender of the five AQIM members is associated with an amnesty offer given to terrorists who renounce violence and desire to reintegrate into civilian life. The amnesty was encouraged by former GSPC leader Hassan Hattab.





Philippines

At least 31 Abu Sayyaf militants and 23 soldiers have been killed in intense combat in Basilan province as government troops sustained a massive offensive against terrorist encampments in the remote jungle. The military began the offensive against Abu Sayyaf last month, after Italian Red Cross worker Antonio Vagni was rescued from captivity.

The Taliban killed two tribal leaders in Bajaur and a tribal leader in North Waziristan and wounded a paramilitary troop in a rocket attack in Landi Kotal. The military killed 12 Taliban fighters in attacks on camps in Kurram and Arakzai.

Yemeni planes bomb north province for 2nd day



Iraq

Two suicide bombers killed 20 Iraqis and wounded 35 more in Sinjar. Security forces detained 17 wanted men in Basrah and two al Qaeda operatives in Makhmour, and defused IEDs in Ninewa and Fallujah. The police are preparing to take control of the city of Mosul.
