Security forces killed eight Taliban fighters in Buner and four Taliban fighters in Bajaur. The Taliban torched two NATO oil tankers in Baluchistan, destroyed a military base in South Waziristan, and bombed a private school in Peshawar.


Al Qaeda

Sheikh Saeed al Saudi, a member of al Qaeda’s executive council, was targeted in one of the Dec. 17 airstrikes in North Waziristan by the US after intelligence indicated he was attending a high-level meeting in North Waziristan. Al Saudi, who is Osama bin Laden’s brother-in-law, survived the strike.

Russia

A suicide bomber targeted a group of policemen and soldiers in the city of Nazran in the Russian Republic of Ingushetia. The suicide bomber wounded 23 police, soldiers, and civilians after detonating his car bomb in the city.


Pakistan

The military killed 16 Taliban fighters in Arakzai and six more in South Waziristan. The Taliban attacked a Frontier Corps base in Khyber. A senior government official denied that terrorists are present in Punjab.




Philippines

Security forces surrounded the remote mountain hideout of Abu Sayyaf terrorists in Basilan who abducted a college professor from his home on Dec. 10. Yesterday, Abu Sayyaf beheaded a Filipino worker abducted from a plywood factory in November along with two other workers; the two workers, who are Chinese, are believed to be alive.


Somalia

Shabaab in Mogadishu reportedly split into two groups after a disagreement over the formation of an Islamic government in the capital. Shabaab issued a decree ordering men in Kismayo to grow beards. Hundreds of Ethiopian troops crossed the border and established a base at the strategic Kalaber junction.
