Insurgents killed five civilians and security personnel and wounded 13 more during attacks in Touz Khormato, Baghdad, Babil, and Tal Afar. An insurgent was killed while planting a bomb in Amiriyah. Security forces detained 11 wanted men in Basrah and seven more in Baqubah. The US has shut down detainee operations at Camp Bucca.

Afghanistan

A suicide bomber killed six Italian soldiers and 10 Afghan civilians in an attack near the US embassy in Kabul. The Taliban killed two British soldiers in separate attacks in Helmand on Sept. 16 and one civilian in a bombing in Khost.


Philippines

Two people were killed and 15 more were wounded in a grenade attack at a carnival on Jolo island by suspected Abu Sayyaf terrorists. Ten Moro Islamic Liberation Front fighters surrendered to the military in Mindanao, handing over a variety of small arms and ammunition.


Thailand

Three Muslim men were killed and seven others were wounded in four separate shootings and a roadside bomb attack in Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala provinces. Despite violence in the southern provinces, economists predict that the Thai economy will dramatically recover and expand next year.

Pakistan

Al Qaeda leaders Ilyas Kashmiri and Najmuddin Jalolov are thought to have been been killed during recent US airstrikes. The Pakistani Army captured a senior Swat Taliban commander and killed 11 fighters; eight more fighters were killed in Dera Ismail Khan, and six Taliban camps were destroyed in Hangu.


Iraq

Insurgents killed seven Iraqi civilian and security personnel and wounded 15 more in attacks in Fallujah, Baqubah, Mosul, Baghdad, and near Kirkuk. Security forces detained two Ansar al Islam fighters in Erbil.


United Arab Emirates

Security forces arrested 45 suspects thought to be involved with a plot to blow up the Burj Dubai, or Dubai Tower, the tallest building in the world. Palestinians, Syrians, and Lebanese were among those arrested. Iran is accused of being behind the plot.
