Taliban spreading to settled areas of Pakistan’s Northwest

Five US soldiers and nine Afghans were killed in bombings throughout the country over the past two days. Coalition forces killed five Taliban fighters and detained three more during an operation in Zabul. Finland will send an additional 100 troops to Afghanistan.

USAF helps Iraqi Air Force expand operations in Al Kut


Iraq

Six soldiers were killed in separate IED attacks in northern Iraq. One child was killed in an IED attack in Diyala and 20 Iraqis were wounded in a shootout in Basrah. Security forces detained two wanted men in Al Kut.

Text of UN Security Council resolution for Gaza cease-fire

Israel has rejected the UN Security Council truce resolution and plans to expand operations in southern Gaza. The Israeli Air Force struck more than 50 targets in the Gaza Strip; two Palestinians were reported killed. Hamas fired 30 rockets into the Negev.

Lashkar-e-Taiba

Jamaat-ud Dawa, Lashkar-e-Taiba’s front group, said Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and Zarar Shah, the masterminds behind the Mumbai terror assault, never had links with Hafiz Saeed or the organization. Jamaat-ud Dawa also suggested the lone surviving Mumbai terrorist was kidnapped by Indian intelligence and forced to conduct the attack.

US intelligence said al Qaeda’s operational commander for Pakistan and his lieutenant were killed in the Jan. 1 airstrike in South Waziristan. Both men were wanted for the 1998 US embassy bombings in East Africa. The Taliban bombed a CD shop in Peshawar.




Somalia

Abdirahman Farole was elected as Puntland president. A United States Naval Commander will lead an international force of 20 members to combat the Somali pirate attacks.


Iran

Iran bans volunteers from fighting Israel


Iraq

Violence is down 93 percent during the last quarter of 2008. Six Iraqi soldiers were killed in two bombings in Jalawlaa. Iraqi forces detained 18 wanted men in Mosul, six insurgents in Kirkuk, four al Qaeda fighters in Diyala, and prevented a terrorist attack in Baghdad.

Afghan and Coalition forces killed a Taliban IED facilitator in Helmand province and six Taliban fighters in Farah province, and detained five Haqqani Network fighters in Khost and Kandahar province. Eight Afghan women were killed in a rocket attack in Uruzgan province. One Canadian soldier was killed in an IED attack in Kandahar.

IDF officer killed as Israeli troops hit five squads of Gaza militants



Israel

Hezbollah denied involvement in the rocket attacks launched from Lebanon into northern Israel. Hamas fired 23 rockets and mortars into southern Israel. The IDF found a Hamas map of booby-trapped homes in Gaza. The Red Cross said the IDF is allowing children in Gaza to starve.
