Taliban assault military base in Mohmand

The Taliban attacked a Frontier Corps base in battalion strength; 40 Taliban fighters and 15 Frontier Corps troops reported killed; more than 25 troops reported missing. Four soldiers were mutilated in Bajaur.



Yemen

The Yemeni Interior Ministry released Salim Hamdan, an admitted driver for Osama bin Laden, who has been found guilty of supporting terrorism by a military jury at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Hamdan was transferred to Yemeni custody in November 2088 after serving a little over five years of a five and a half year sentence.


Somalia

Three Somalis died after releasing the giant Saudi Super-Tanker. Spain is sending a frigate and a plane to assist pirate fighting efforts. Two aid workers held hostage for 108 days were released.

Afghanistan

Australian special forces killed a Taliban leader and several other fighters during an operation in Uruzgan province. CENTCOM commander General David Petraeus said Iran should have an interest stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan, but there are “major conflicting interests” with the West.



Pakistan

Tribal leaders in the northwest pledged 60,000 fighters if there is a war with India. Seventeen Pakistanis were killed and more than 30 were wounded during sectarian clashes in Hangu. The Taliban are running sharia courts in Swat.


Al Qaeda

In a message released on the Internet, al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Omar al Baghdadi vowed to support the Palestinians in Gaza. “We in Iraq shall not abandon our (Arab) people in Gaza … And we shall step up our operations against the American occupiers,” he said.


Iraq

Iraqi forces detained 16 wanted men in Baghdad, two in Kirkuk, and two more in Tal Afar. US and Iraqi troops detained a Special Groups operative in Baghdad. An Iraqi soldier was killed in an IED attack in Touz Khormato.


Israel

The Israeli Defense Force dropped leaflets in Gaza City that warned it is about to begin a “new phase in the war on terror,” and that it will “escalate” the operation. Israeli troops killed the chief of Gaza City’s rocket cells. Hamas launched 10 rockets into Israel, wounding 14 Israelis.



Lebanon

The Lebanese Army arrested seven members of Lebanese Hamas who admited they were behind the Jan. 8 rocket attack into northern Israel. The Army and UNIFIL found a cache of 34 Grad rockets inside two bunkers in southern Lebanon.




Pakistan

The government reportedly reestablished contact with Baitullah Mehsud. The Taliban released 13 tribal leaders kidnapped in Bajaur. Five small explosions at two theaters in Lahore wounded six people. Two government officials were gunned down in North Waziristan.
