The military ordered a 4-day ceasefire in Bajaur while the Swat Taliban agreed to implement an indefinite ceasefire. The commander of the Frontier Corps urged NATO to seal the Afghan border. Two civilians were killed in a bombing that targeted policemen in Kohat.


Somalia

Fighting in Mogadishu erupted today after African Union peacekeepers and Somali government forces expanded into several Mogadishu districts under insurgent control. The fighting left 21 killed and more than a dozen people wounded.

Iran ‘offered to halt attacks on UK troops’ in nuclear pact



Iraq

Iraqi forces detained 100 suspected insurgents in a major operation in Ninewa province. Security forces detained 67 wanted men in Basrah, 15 in Baghdad, seven in Hawija, and four Al Naqshabandiya fighters in Kirkuk. Three US soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter were killed in Diyala, and four US soldiers were wounded in Mosul.

Four Coalition soldiers and an Afghan civilian were killed in an IED attack in Helmand province. Afghan troops killed 16 Taliban fighters in Helmand. Japan will pay Afghan National Police salaries for the next half year. New Zealand extended its deployment of 140 soldiers by one year.

A court sentenced three members of an al Qaeda cell to seven years each in jail for conspiring to attack tourists and government facilities. A 15-year-old member of the cell was sentenced to two years in jail. The cell plotted the attacks to avenge the death of al Qaeda field commander Hamza al-Kaithi

A new Waziristan Taliban alliance has been formed on the orders of Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar. The Bajaur Taliban announced a unilateral ceasefire and the military took control of a vital region. The military killed 10 Lashkar-e-Islam fighters in Khyber. A suicide bomber killed a policeman in Bannu.


Afghanistan

One policeman was killed in a Taliban dual suicide attack on an anti-narcotics police unit in the city of Zarang in Nimroz province. Coalition forces killed seven Taliban fighters in Badghis. A tribesman accused Canadian forces of killing two boys who died from injuries from an unexploded shell left on the battlefield.


Iraq

Security forces detained 12 interior ministry personnel behind sectarian murders, six al Qaeda fighters in Diyala, four wanted men in Maysan, four in Dhi Qhar, and two more in Makhmour. Two al Qaeda fighters were killed in Diyala. Two soldiers and a civilian were killed in Baghdad.


Algeria

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb killed nine security guards and wounded two in a military assault on a camp that guarded a state-owned gas and electricity distributor in Jijel. A “horde” of fighters attacked the camp after launching one or more mortars.
