Afghanistan

Seven Afghan soldiers were killed in an IED attack in Khost province. Four civilians were killed and six were wounded in an IED attack in Helmand province. Afghan and British forces have launched an operation in the Kanishin area of Helmand province.




Somalia

Somalia’s council of ministers on Tuesday endorsed a plan to introduce sharia, or Islamic law, in the country, a key demand by Islamists who are opposed to the government. Germany’s navy handed over nine suspected Somali pirates to Kenyan authorities.





Pakistan

The Army and Rangers have deployed in Punjab province to disrupt the Long March. Police have begun arresting members of the opposition, including Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, and Imran Khan. Security forces claimed to have killed 35 Taliban fighters in Dara Adam Khel.


The Taliban

Mullah Abdullah Zakir, the Taliban’s top operations officer in southern Afghanistan, was a detainee at the Guantánamo Bay detention facility. The US released Zakir and 12 other Taliban fighters to Afghan custody in December 2007. The Afghan government later released him.

Iran

Major-General Hassan Firouzabadi, the top military commander, said the US is “warmongering” and he sees no change in policy toward his country. Iran is counting on Russia to facilitate the opening of the Bushehr nuclear power plant by September 2009.

The US Government Accountability Office said attacks on local Afghan security forces have tripled over the past year; on average, more than 56 police officers were killed per month. An Afghan reporter who worked with the Canadian media was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in the city of Kandahar.

Pakistani officials believe the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore was carried out by the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. Security forces detained 125 militants in Kohat. The Taliban murdered three “US spies” in South Waziristan and released five soldiers in Bajaur. A court extended the house arrest of Lashkar-e-Taiba leader Hafiz Saeed.


Somalia

Fighting between Shabaab and Ahlu Suna Waljama has broken out in Bardhere. Islamic Courts fighters detained five Somalis in Beledweyne. Hizbul Islam vowed to attack African Union peacekeepers. Shabaab publicly flogged four boys accused of rape in Mogadishu. The Elman Human Rights groups said that 7,574 people were killed in Somalia during 2008.

Iraq

Two Awakening fighters and two policemen were killed, and four policemen were wounded, in attacks in Baghdad, Mosul, and Salahadin. Security forces detained 67 wanted men in Thi Qhar, 25 in central Iraq, and two more in Maysan. Iraqi emergency police have deployed in the Al Qaim region to seal the border with Syria.


Afghanistan

The US is considering using Iran as an alternate supply route for its forces in Afghanistan. The Afghan government urged Iran to aid in stabilizing the country. One Canadian soldier was killed and four were wounded in an IED attack in Kandahar.
