Iraq

Iraq troops detained 58 wanted men in Karbala and 10 more in Basrah. Iraqi and US troops detained 7 “criminals” in Baghdad. In separate incidents in Mosul, one policeman was killed and one was wounded, and two Iraqis were wounded.


Afghanistan

Afghan forces killed 11 Taliban fighters during an attack on a hideout in Zabul province. One British soldier were killed in an IED attack in Helmand province. Ten security guards were killed in two separate bombings in Paktia province and another five were killed in Kandahar province.


Iran

Jundallah killed one civilian and wounded two others in an attack on a bus west of Zahedan, where violence has broken out over the past week. Israel’s foreign minister said his country has no intentions of bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities. President Ahmadinejad called the Holocaust a “big deception.”


Al Qaeda

Osama bin Laden released an audiotape to coincide with President Obama’s visit to the Middle East. “Obama and his administration have sowed new seeds of hatred against America,” bin Laden said, chastising the US for its support of Pakistani operations in Swat. Yesterday Ayman al Zawahiri released a tape, also criticizing Obama for visiting Egypt.


Algeria

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb fighters ambushed a convoy of teachers in Timezrit. An IED was followed by gunfire; two teachers and eight policemen were killed in the attack. An Algerian extradited from Britain has fled to the Afghanistan/Pakistan region and is thought to have rejoined al Qaeda.

Government forces took control of two police stations in northern and southern Mogadishu after battling Hizbul Islam and Shabaab. Ten Somalis were reported killed in the fighting. Somali troops moved into the town of Beledweyne. Gunmen kidnapped a TV director outside of Mogadishu.

Exchanging their firearms for monetary reward, 19 Moro Islamic Liberation Front insurgents surrendered at a military encampment in lligan City. In the village of Bulanan in Maguindanao province, three MILF fighters were killed by an Army patrol. Azerbaijan

A court is secretly trying two Lebanese men and four Azerbaijanis for involvement with a terror plot to attack the Israeli and US embassies, and the Gabala missile-detection radar station in the country’s north. The six men are accused of being “connected to” both Hezbollah and al Qaeda, a court spokesman said.



Iran

A senior Iranian official said that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khomeini, and not the elected president of Iran, will decide on the direction of the country’s nuclear program and relations with the US. More than 30 people were detained after unrest in the southern city of Zahedan that resulted in the deaths of 10 people.

The Lahore High Court ordered the release of Hafiz Saeed despite the government’s presenting evidence linking him to al Qaeda. Pakistan said India’s disappointment at Saeed’s release is “misplaced” and claimed India did not provide evidence that allowed Saeed to be detained. Saeed denied that his group has any links to the Mumbai assault.
