Somalia: Al Shabaab ‘TV ban’ controversy, expel WFP


Somalia

Three government soldiers were killed during infighting in Mogadishu. The Ethiopian government denied reports that its soldiers have reentered Somalia; Ethiopian troops inside Somalia said they are tasked with rooting out foreign fighters. Shabaab threatened to attack the Ethiopian troops.


Yemen

Security services arrested Hassan Hussein Bin Alwan, a Saudi Arabian national who served as al Qaeda senior financier in Yemen. Alwan was detained in Marib province and charged with forming a terror group.

Afghanistan

Afghan and Coalition forces killed Taliban commander Mullah Dastgir and 14 fighters in Farah province, and killed four Taliban fighters in Badghis province. The Taliban killed four civilians in Paktia province, murdered a midwife and her husband in Farah, and killed a British officer in Helmand province.


US kills 5 in South Waziristan strike

predator-uav.jpgToday’s strike targeted a vehicle in the Ladha region, which is controlled by Baitullah Mehsud; five terrorists are reported to have been killed. This is the first strike since May 16.



Iran

Rioting has broken out in Tehran after supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi took to the streets to protest what they called rigged elections. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iranians should acknowledge President Ahmadinejad’s landslide victory, which he termed a “divine assessment.” There are rumors Mousavi has been arrested.


Somalia

Ethiopian troops entered Somalia and established bases in the town of Balanbal in Galgudud province. Hisbul Islam wanted pro-government factions not to organize in Gedo. Ahlu Sunna Waljama is conducting operations in Abudwak in central Somalia.

The military said 35 Taliban fighters were killed in Bannu and the Frontier Corps fort in Jani Khel was retaken. Al Qaeda

Adam Gadahn, the American-born al Qaeda propagandist, released a 35-minute-long videotape called “Let’s Continue Our Jihad and Sacrifice.” Gadahn accused President Obama of supporting Israel’s assault in Gaza and warned the Muslim world not to be tricked by Obama’s “deceptive and false talk.”




Iran

Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli said that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won the presidential election in a landslide with more than 62 percent of the vote. Westerners said the vote was rigged by Iran’s mullahs.


Afghanistan

A suicide bomber killed five soldiers and four drivers in an attack ona NATO fuel convoy in Helmand province. A British soldier was killed during fighting in Helmand. Afghan and Coalition forces detained a Taliban commander and killed one fighter during a raid in the Sharana district in Paktika province.


Iraq

Security forces detained 30 wanted men in Basrah and six more in Maysan, and captured three Special Groups fighters in Wasit, one in Baghdad, and another in Basrah. One US soldier was killed and three more were wounded while defusing an IED in Samarra. Two Iraqi police were wounded in an IED attack in Kirkuk.






Pakistan

The Taliban took credit for suicide attacks that killed 11 people, including an anti-Taliban cleric, at mosques in Lahore and Nowshera. Thirty-nine Taliban fighters and ten soldiers were killed in Swat; 21 Taliban fighters were killed in Bannu. Twelve Taliban and two soldiers were killed during fighting in Mohmand. Iran

IRNA, Iran’s state-run news agency, said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is leading the presidential election with 66 percent of the vote, with more than 68 percent of the votes counted so far. Mir Hossein Moussavi, the so-called reform candidate, has 31 percent of the vote.
