Pakistan: Militancy ‘claims over 3,000 lives’ in tribal areas



Pakistan

Forty-one Pakistani troops were killed after a helicopter crashed in Arakzai. Thirteen Taliban fighters were killed in two US airstrikes in South Waziristan; another seven were killed in Pakistani airstrikes. Tribes agreed to a peace deal in Dera Ismail Khan.


Somalia

African peacekeepers targeted Al Shabaab and Hizbul Islam with artillery fire in neighborhoods in Mogadishu. Ethiopian troops have withdrawn from the town of Balanbal in central Somalia. Shabaab chopped off the hand of a man convicted in a sharia court in the town of Merka.



Iraq

Two Iraqis were killed and nine were wounded in a bombing in Kirkuk. Security forces detained two wanted men in Makhmour. Four electricity towers were bombed in Baghdad. A US UAV crashed near Al Kut.


Afghanistan

US Marines killed more than 30 Taliban fighters during a shootout and subsequent airstrike on a compound in Helmand’s Garmsir district. One Marine was killed during the fighting in Helmand. Russia has agreed to allow NATO weapons shipments to pass through its territory.

Somalia

Seven Somalis were killed during clashes between Hizbul Islam and government forces in northern Mogadishu. Ethiopian troops have moved near Beledweyn in central Somalia. President Sharif accused Shabaab and Hizbul Islam of using child soldiers in Somalia. “Terrorists spend effort to trick young children…Al Qaeda is involved in this,” Sharif said.


Iran

Ahmadinejad’s campaign manager claimed the president won the election fairly. The Guardian Council closed the file on the post-election review. The Justice minister said that Iran’s enemies’ efforts to “distort” the election were fruitless. Iranian security forces arrested seven “anti-revolutionary elements” in northern Iran.



Pakistan

A Waziri tribal leader said Mullah Nazir would sit out the fighting in South Waziristan; Nazir denied the report. The military killed 23 Taliban in Swat and moved troops to the border of Afghanistan’s Helmand province. United States

At least three Somali Americans living in Minneapolis reportedly have been indicted for recruiting more than 20 young men to fight for al Qaeda-linked Shabaab in Somalia. One of the recruits became a suicide bomber. The indictments are reportedly still sealed and may be released in the next few weeks.
