United States

An al Qaeda-linked Nigerian man was subdued by passengers after attempting to detonate an explosive cocktail during a flight. The Northwest Airlines-chartered plane en route from Amsterdam landed safely at its destination in Detroit.


Somalia

Clashes between Islamists and government and African Union forces killed 15 people in Mogadishu. Clashes between Puntland security forces and tribal militias resulted in 11 people killed. Hizbul Islam denounced the UNSC sanctions against Eritrea.



Iraq

Twenty-five Iraqis were killed and more than 100 were wounded in yesterday’s bombing in Hillah. Three Kurdish soldiers were killed in a bombing in Sinjar. Four Iraqis were killed in bombings in Baghdad.


Afghanistan

The Taliban released a propaganda video of Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl, the captive US soldier. Coalition and Afghan forces killed and captured an undisclosed number of Taliban and Haqqani Network fighters in Wardak and Paktika provinces.





Pakistan

The Taliban killed five Pakistanis in suicide attacks in Peshawar and Rawalpindi, and blew up two schools in Khyber. Security forces detained 32 suspected Taliban fighters in Kohat, 18 in Malakand, and four in Mianwali.




Indonesia

Bahrudin Latif, the father-in-law of the late terrorist Noordin Mohammad Top, was arrested in a predawn raid in West Java. Latif, who is also known as Baridin, helped Top evade police detection shortly before Top masterminded the July 2009 Jakarta hotel bombings.


Afghanistan

A suicide bomber killed eight people in an attack in Kandahar. The Taliban killed two civilians in Paktika and a Canadian soldier in the South. Afghan and Coalition forces detained an undisclosed number of Taliban and Haqqani Network fighters in in Helmand, Kandahar, and Khost.


Iran

A Russian diplomat said his country is not convinced Iran’s nuclear program has a military component. The Iranian defense minister said Iran would deploy Iranian-made satellites. Security forces killed two people during a melee at an execution, banned memorials for an opposition cleric, and detained a former government spokesman.


Iraq

Terrorist killed 20 Iraqis during attacks on Shia processions in Baghdad, Sadr City, Karbala, and Hillah. Iraqi security forces detained 16 wanted men in Basrah, two members of an IED cell in Fallujah, a Syrian suicide bomber in Baghdad.

The Yemeni government is claiming that Nasir al Wuhayshi, the leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, his deputy Said al Shihri, and radical US-Yemeni cleric Anwar al Awlaki may have been killed in an airstrike that killed more than 30 al Qaeda operatives. The reports are unconfirmed.
