Najibullah Zazi is said to have admitted to receiving explosives training at an al Qaeda camp in Pakistan and may plead guilty as part of a deal to cooperate with the government. Zazi was the subject of FBI raids in New York City and Denver earlier this week.

Security forces killed a senior leader in the Naqshabandiya group in Khanaqin and detained two insurgents in Mosul. Insurgents killed seven civilians and wounded 21 more during a bombing at a market in Mahmudiya and kidnapped 11 civilians in Babil.


Iran

Tens of thousands of protesters chanted “death to the dictator” and hurled rocks at Iranian security forces during a march in Tehran. President Ahmadinejad called the Holocaust “a lie” during a speech. NATO wants Russia to pressure Iran to halt its nuclear program.

Shabaab fighters have six more stolen United Nations vehicles primed as suicide bombs, the government said. Iran

The IAEA reported that Iran has “sufficient information” to build a nuclear weapon and is likely to “overcome problems” with developing a delivery system. US lawmakers called for tougher sanctions on Iran. Iran’s foreign minister said that there will be no direct talks between US and Iran on October 1.


Somalia

Two Shabaab suicide bombers killed the deputy African Union commander and eight others in an attack on a base in Mogadishu. Shabaab took credit for the attack. Shabaab issued terms to the French that would ensure the release of a captive security official.


Iraq

Insurgents killed five civilians and security personnel and wounded 13 more during attacks in Touz Khormato, Baghdad, Babil, and Tal Afar. An insurgent was killed while planting a bomb in Amiriyah. Security forces detained 11 wanted men in Basrah and seven more in Baqubah. The US has shut down detainee operations at Camp Bucca.



Indonesia

Counterterrorism police killed wanted Jemaah Islamiyah and al Qaeda leader Mohammed Noordin Top and three of his aides during a raid in Central Java. Afghanistan

A suicide bomber killed six Italian soldiers and 10 Afghan civilians in an attack near the US embassy in Kabul. The Taliban killed two British soldiers in separate attacks in Helmand on Sept. 16 and one civilian in a bombing in Khost.


Philippines

Two people were killed and 15 more were wounded in a grenade attack at a carnival on Jolo island by suspected Abu Sayyaf terrorists. Ten Moro Islamic Liberation Front fighters surrendered to the military in Mindanao, handing over a variety of small arms and ammunition.


Thailand

Three Muslim men were killed and seven others were wounded in four separate shootings and a roadside bomb attack in Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala provinces. Despite violence in the southern provinces, economists predict that the Thai economy will dramatically recover and expand next year.
