Philippines

At least 31 Abu Sayyaf militants and 23 soldiers have been killed in intense combat in Basilan province as government troops sustained a massive offensive against terrorist encampments in the remote jungle. The military began the offensive against Abu Sayyaf last month, after Italian Red Cross worker Antonio Vagni was rescued from captivity.


Pakistan

The Taliban killed two tribal leaders in Bajaur and a tribal leader in North Waziristan and wounded a paramilitary troop in a rocket attack in Landi Kotal. The military killed 12 Taliban fighters in attacks on camps in Kurram and Arakzai.

Seven Pakistani clerics were killed in Puntland; Puntland officials are blaming each other for the deaths. Two civilians were killed during shelling in Mogadishu. Shabaab said it captured weapons en route to rival clans in central Somalia.

Iraq

Two suicide bombers killed 20 Iraqis and wounded 35 more in Sinjar. Security forces detained 17 wanted men in Basrah and two al Qaeda operatives in Makhmour, and defused IEDs in Ninewa and Fallujah. The police are preparing to take control of the city of Mosul.

The Taliban killed 14 civilians during bombings in Helmand and Kandahar. Three ISAF soldiers were killed in a IED attack in southern Afghanistan. Iran’s envoy to the IAEA asked the UN to hold a conference of 150 countries to vote on a proposal which bans attacks on nuclear installations. Foreign Minister Mottaki warned against an expanded U.S. military presence in Latin America. Former presidential candidate Karroubi urged investigation into prison rape allegations.






Russia

Ingushetian Construction Minister Ruslan Amirkhanov was shot dead by insurgents as he was working in his office. Amirkhanov is the latest in a series of senior politicians targeted by the Caucasus Emirate. Two policemen were killed in a shooting in the Chechen capital of Grozny.



Pakistan

Clashes between Baitullah Mehsud’s forces and the Abdullah Mehsud Group in Tank reportedly led to more than 70 Taliban fighters killed. Two children were killed in an IED blast in Bajaur. Security forces detained 46 suspected Taliban fighters in Swat.

In an early morning raid by the military on an Abu Sayyaf jungle encampment, 10 fighters were killed and an arsenal of improvised explosive devices was discovered and detonated.
