Prague Watchdog conducted an exclusive phone interview with Doku Umarov, confirming he was not killed during recent fighting. Doku said his forces will attempt to avoid civilian targets, “but for me there are no civilians in Russia.” He also said “even bigger operations” than Beslan will be carried out.

Iran will place British Embassy staffers on trial for inciting protests. A conservative newspaper accused Mir Hossein Mousavi of being a “US agent” and advocated he be tried for treason. The new IAEA chief said there is no hard evidence Iran seeks to build nuclear weapons. Iran publicly hanged 20 people for drug trafficking.


Pakistan

The military said 12 Taliban fighters were killed during airstrikes near the helicopter crash in Arakzai. Nine lashkar fighters and three Taliban fighters were killed during clashes in Mohmand. A Taliban fighter was killed after the Taliban ambush a lashkar in Dir. The military shelled Taliban hideouts in Lakki Marwat.

Insurgents killed a policeman in Kirkuk, a civilian in Baghdad, and an Iraqi contractor in Mosul. Security forces detained nine wanted men in Jalawlaa, an al Qaeda fighter in Wasit, a mufti for the Islamic State of Iraq in Buhriz, a car bomb cell member in Kirkuk, and a Special Groups leader in Al Kut.

Russia

Nine Chechen police were killed in Ingushetia when insurgents opened fire on their convoy from a forested area. Nine more police were injured in this attack; two troops from the Russian Interior Ministry died the previous day as a result of three separate blasts in Chechnya; five more servicemen were wounded in the blasts.


Serbia

A special terrorism court in Belgrade sentenced 11 members of a radical Islamist group for plotting terror attacks and possessing weapons. Senad Ramovic, the group’s leader, was sentenced to 13 years in prision while the others received terms of between six months to eight years in jail.


Malaysia

Police detained three suspected members of Jemaah Islamiyah in southern Johor last week. The men are believed to have met Mas Selamat bin Kastari, the leader of the Singapore cell of Jemaah Islamiyah. Kastari escaped from prison in Singapore in January 2006.

Forty-one Pakistani troops were killed after a helicopter crashed in Arakzai. Thirteen Taliban fighters were killed in two US airstrikes in South Waziristan; another seven were killed in Pakistani airstrikes. Tribes agreed to a peace deal in Dera Ismail Khan.


Somalia

African peacekeepers targeted Al Shabaab and Hizbul Islam with artillery fire in neighborhoods in Mogadishu. Ethiopian troops have withdrawn from the town of Balanbal in central Somalia. Shabaab chopped off the hand of a man convicted in a sharia court in the town of Merka.



Iraq

Two Iraqis were killed and nine were wounded in a bombing in Kirkuk. Security forces detained two wanted men in Makhmour. Four electricity towers were bombed in Baghdad. A US UAV crashed near Al Kut.
