Pakistan

The military claimed 13 Taliban fighters were killed in Swat and Dir. The Taliban killed two policemen in Mardan and another in Peshawar. The military said Jani Khel in Bannu has been cleared. The pending operation against Baitullah Mehsud is called Rah-e-Nijat.


Iraq

A US soldier was killed in an IED attack near Samawah. Security forces detained 20 wanted men in Anbar and three more in Mosul, six al Qaeda fighters in Mandali, two Naqshabandiya fighters in Kirkuk, and an IED cell member in Samawah.


Al Qaeda

Al Qaeda military commander Qari Zai Rahman is reported to have been killed during clashes in Bajaur, and Tahir Yuldashev is reported to have been wounded during strikes in South Waziristan. The reports are unconfirmed.



India

The Guardian Council said it may recount some of the votes as tens of thousands of protesters of rivals President Ahmedinejad and Mir Hossein Mousavi took to the streets. Seven demonstrators were killed by the IRGC-supported Basij militia. The US urged Iran to accept an invitation to nuclear talks.

Four Taliban fighters and an Afghan soldier were killed during a clash in Kunduz province. Afghan and Coalition forces killed “several” Taliban fighters and detained four more during a raid on a drug factory in Helmand province, detained four Haqqani Network fighters in Paktia province, and destroyed a drug and weapons cache in Uruzgan province. The military said 31 Taliban fighters were killed in airstrikes in Mohmand and six more were killed in Bannu and Swat. Nine Taliban fighters and two soldiers were killed during a Taliban ambush in Lower Dir; four more Taliban fighters were killed by a lashkar in Upper Dir.



Lebanon

Security forces broke up “a huge network of Al-Qaeda,” Brigadier General Jean Kahwaji, the commander of the Lebanese Army said. The group was plotting to “destabilise Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Gulf countries including Kuwait.” No further details on the cell were given.

General Odierno said there is a “significant decrease in the flow of foreign fighters into Iraq in the last eight to 10 months.” Two Iraqis were killed and six were wounded in two bombings in Baghdad. A former army general was assassinated in Mosul. Security forces detained 11 suspected insurgents in Dhi Qhar.

More than 500,000 demonstrators have taken to the streets of Tehran and are organizing in other cities to protest the reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. General McChrystal has assumed command of Coalition forces in Afghanistan. US forces killed 23 Taliban fighters in Uruzgan province. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in southern Afghanistan and attacked musicians for playing at a wedding in Nangarhar province.
