Security forces arrested Mas Selamat Kastari, the leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah branch in Singapore. Kastari was detained on April 1 in the state of Johor, near the border with Singapore. He escaped from a high-security jail in Singapore in February 2008.

Pakistan

The military claimed it killed 69 Taliban fighters during operations in Swat and Buner. Seventeen civilians were wounded in a grenade attack at a mosque in Dera Ismail Khan. Three suspected suicide bombers were detained in Lahore. The US will provide Pakistan with five attack helicopters for counter insurgency uses.

Abu Izzadeen, a radical Islamist preacher who was jailed for threatening to behead Muslim soldiers in the British Army, was released from prison after serving three-and-a-half years. Izzadeen and other radical Islamists in jail have had their sentences reduced by the Court of Appeal.
