The military claimed 55 Taliban fighters were killed in Swat, 25 were killed in Dir, 18 were killed after attacking a convoy in South Waziristan, and five more were killed in Peshawar. A US strike targeted Baitullah Mehsud’s fighters in South Waziristan. President Zardari said the Swat offensive “will not be withdrawn.”


Somalia

Seven people were killed after government forces attacked a police station in Mogadishu that is under the control of Hizbul Islam. Two ICU fighters were killed in a market. Fifteen Somalis were killed during fighting in the capital yesterday. Shabaab chopped off the hand of a thief in Kismayo.


Iraq

Insurgents assassinated a police general in Basrah, killed one policeman and wounded three civilians in an armed attack on a police station Mosul, and wounded five civilians in an IED attack in Saadiya. Iraqi forces detained 18 insurgents in Fallujah, ten wanted men in Basrah, and an al Qaeda fighter in Baghdad.

The military claimed 143 Taliban fighters and seven troops were killed in Swat and another 15 Taliban fighters were killed in Dir. More than one million people have fled the Malakand region. The deputy inspector general of police in Kohat has been kidnapped. The Taliban bombed a shrine in Peshawar.




Iraq

Security forces detained five members of the Naqshabandiya group and 16 other insurgents during raids in Diyala province and four wanted men in Maysan. Three policemen and a civilian were wounded in a bombing in Mosul.


Philippines

Heavily-armed Abu Sayyaf fighters ambushed police, killing four police officers, including the chief of police in Sulu. Four Abu Sayyaf fighters were killed in the ensuing firefight. Two fishermen were wounded in Sarangani by suspected Moro Islamic Front rebels who indiscriminately attacked a coastal village.
