Abu Sayyaf released one of three Red Cross hostages held on Jolo island after three months in captivity. The two other hostages were reported to be alive but in danger. In an unrelated incident, a nine-year-old hostage was also freed by Abu Sayyaf linked militants in Basilan.
One policeman was killed in Kirkuk and another was wounded in Mosul. Three civilians were killed in a bombing in Baqubah and 10 civilians were wounded in two bombings in and near Mosul. Security forces detained 50 wanted men in Basrah, 17 in Baghdad, and eight al Qaeda fighters in Baqubah.
The US may send an additional 10,000 troops to Afghanistan. US Defense Secretary Gates chided European leaders for failing to build support for an Afghan surge. NATO has failed to respond to a call for 4,000 additional troops. ISAF’s senior spokesman said cooperation between Afghanistan and Pakistan is improving.
Yesterday’s airstrike in Arakzai targeted a meeting being held by Hakeemullah Mehsud and al Qaeda operatives. A senior al Qaeda operative and three other Arabs were reported killed in the attack.
A US District Court judge ruled that detainees captured outside of Afghanistan and held at Bagram prison in Afghanistan have the right to appeal their detention in US courts. The judge cited last year’s Supreme Court ruling that gave prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba the right to challenge their detentions.
