Jemaah Islamiyah

Philippine troops detained Jemaah Islamiyah bombmaker Giovanni De Ocampo and four associates after a clash in the southern Compostela Valley province. Ocampo was a leader in the communist New People’s Army. Books written by executed Bali bombers Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra are being sold in Indonesia despite a ban.

Hezbollah denies involvement in abduction of Lebanese soldier


Iraq

Bombings in Mosul and Kirkuk killed three soldiers and one civilian, and wounded 20 others. Security forces detained one wanted man in Baghdad and two more in Khanaqin, and five members of a group involved in the bombings of policemen’s homes in Anbar.

Swat agreement unnerving the US: Top intelligence official

The US Senate Majority Leader stated that Lashkar-e-Taiba has links with Pakistan’s Inter-Service Intelligence agency and that it was built by the ISI to fight in Kashmir. ‘So its [LeT’s] relationship to the Pakistan intelligence service is very disturbing,’ Senator Reid said.


Iran

Iran says capitalism on verge of collapse



Afghanistan

Seven Afghan soldiers were killed in an IED attack in Khost province. Four civilians were killed and six were wounded in an IED attack in Helmand province. Afghan and British forces have launched an operation in the Kanishin area of Helmand province.




Somalia

Somalia’s council of ministers on Tuesday endorsed a plan to introduce sharia, or Islamic law, in the country, a key demand by Islamists who are opposed to the government. Germany’s navy handed over nine suspected Somali pirates to Kenyan authorities.





Pakistan

The Army and Rangers have deployed in Punjab province to disrupt the Long March. Police have begun arresting members of the opposition, including Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, and Imran Khan. Security forces claimed to have killed 35 Taliban fighters in Dara Adam Khel.


The Taliban

Mullah Abdullah Zakir, the Taliban’s top operations officer in southern Afghanistan, was a detainee at the Guantánamo Bay detention facility. The US released Zakir and 12 other Taliban fighters to Afghan custody in December 2007. The Afghan government later released him.

Major-General Hassan Firouzabadi, the top military commander, said the US is “warmongering” and he sees no change in policy toward his country. Iran is counting on Russia to facilitate the opening of the Bushehr nuclear power plant by September 2009.

Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and four other al Qaeda operatives filed a document with the military commission at the Guantánamo Bay detention facility admitting to their role in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. The US Government Accountability Office said attacks on local Afghan security forces have tripled over the past year; on average, more than 56 police officers were killed per month. An Afghan reporter who worked with the Canadian media was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in the city of Kandahar.
