Four Coalition soldiers and an Afghan civilian were killed in an IED attack in Helmand province. Afghan troops killed 16 Taliban fighters in Helmand. Japan will pay Afghan National Police salaries for the next half year. New Zealand extended its deployment of 140 soldiers by one year.

A court sentenced three members of an al Qaeda cell to seven years each in jail for conspiring to attack tourists and government facilities. A 15-year-old member of the cell was sentenced to two years in jail. The cell plotted the attacks to avenge the death of al Qaeda field commander Hamza al-Kaithi

Pakistan

A new Waziristan Taliban alliance has been formed on the orders of Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar. The Bajaur Taliban announced a unilateral ceasefire and the military took control of a vital region. The military killed 10 Lashkar-e-Islam fighters in Khyber. A suicide bomber killed a policeman in Bannu.


Afghanistan

One policeman was killed in a Taliban dual suicide attack on an anti-narcotics police unit in the city of Zarang in Nimroz province. Coalition forces killed seven Taliban fighters in Badghis. A tribesman accused Canadian forces of killing two boys who died from injuries from an unexploded shell left on the battlefield.


Iraq

Security forces detained 12 interior ministry personnel behind sectarian murders, six al Qaeda fighters in Diyala, four wanted men in Maysan, four in Dhi Qhar, and two more in Makhmour. Two al Qaeda fighters were killed in Diyala. Two soldiers and a civilian were killed in Baghdad.


Algeria

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb killed nine security guards and wounded two in a military assault on a camp that guarded a state-owned gas and electricity distributor in Jijel. A “horde” of fighters attacked the camp after launching one or more mortars.

Egypt

One French woman was killed and 21 people, including Egyptian, French, German and Saudi nationals, were wounded in an explosion outside a mosque in a neighborhood in the capital city of Cairo that is popular with tourists. Anther bomb was found and defused. No group has taken responsibility for the attack.


Pakistan

The Taliban released a senior Swat official and his six bodyguards after kidnapping them earlier today; they were exchanged for two Taliban prisoners. The Taliban murdered a policeman in Kohat and destroyed six shops in Khyber. Four Taliban fighters were killed in Bajaur.


Somalia

Shabaab claimed to have conducted a dual suicide attack on Burundi troops in Mogadishu; the African Union claimed the attack was a mortar strike. An Islamic scholars’ council demanded that African Union troops withdraw ‘within 120 days.’ Pirates seized a Greek freighter.


Afghanistan

Afghan and Coalition forces killed a Taliban leader behind IED attacks and suicide attacks in Kandahar province. Eight Taliban fighters in Helmand province and six more in Kandahar were killed during Afghan and Coalition operations. Britain may add an additional 1,800 troops by the end of the year. Iraq

Iraqi security forces detained 13 suspected insurgent in Fallujah, nine in northern Iraq, 8 in Diyala, five in Basrah, four in Thi Qhar, two in Kirkuk, and two more in Mosul. One solider was killed and eight more were wound in separate IED attacks in Mosul.



Taliban kidnap senior Swat official

The Swat Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of the District Coordinating Officer and six of his bodyguards, and said the official is their ‘guest.’





Pakistan

A ‘permanent ceasefire™ was announced in Swat. Security forces killed eight Taliban fighters in Bajaur. The Taliban attacked a NATO fuel tanker in Khyber and killed a paramilitary officer in North Waziristan. Two suicide bombers died from premature detonation in Bannu.
