US airstrikes in on Taliban safe houses North and South Waziristan killed 20 people. The Army spokesman said Taliban sharia equates to “terrorism.” Three soldiers and nine civilians were killed in suicide, roadside bomb, and mortar attacks in Swat.




Afghanistan

During a raid in Logar province, Afghan and Coalition forces killed a Taliban commander and detained a bomb maker behind the Jan. 17 suicide attack near the German Embassy in Kabul. More than 20,000 US Marines may deploy as part of the upcoming “surge.”


Iraq

Iraqi security forces killed three “gunmen” in Mosul, detained four al Qaeda fighters in Mosul, and captured a Special Groups cell leader in Al Kut. One civilian was killed in an IED attack in Baghdad.

Iraq is preparing for a potentially quick US military withdrawal. Eight Iraqis were killed and six were wounded in violent acts throughout Iraq. Security forces detained 20 insurgents in Kirkuk and three more in Basrah.
