Lebanon

Report: Lebanese army boosts troops along Israel border


Israel

Israeli ground forces hit 30 Hamas targets, including weapons storage depots, rocket launch sites, bunkers, and smuggling tunnels. Six more soldiers have been wounded. Hamas attempted to kidnap Israeli sodiers by luring them into tunnels. Hamas launched more than 30 rockets into southern Israel; one hit an empty school in Ashdod.


The Taliban

The Taliban claimed it killed 5,220 US and NATO troops and 7,552 Afghan soldiers and police, destroyed 2,818 NATO and Afghan vehicles, and downed 31 NATO aircraft during operations in 2008. The statement was made on the Taliban website. In reality, only 286 US and NATO troops were killed in Afghanistan.



Thailand

Jan. 4 marks the fifth year of Thailand’s southern Muslim insurgency. One policeman was killed and one was wounded in a clash with insurgents in Narathiwat province. Insurgents murdered a man and wounded his wife in a shooting Pattani province.


Pakistan

Ten Pakistanis were killed in a suicide attack near a college in Dera Ismail Khan. A Baluchi leader said the Taliban is consolidating control in Quetta and are being directed to fight Baluchi nationalists. The Taliban warned women not to go to aid offices or go to school.

Somalia

Nine people were killed in Mogadishu, three were civilians shot by Somali solders outside a hotel. Two journalists, one British and one Spanish, were released in good health after being held hostage for six weeks.


Israel

The Israeli Defense Force has split Gaza into two zones and has surrounded Gaza City. An estimated 40 Hamas fighters have been killed, including two military commanders. Six Israelis were wounded as 45 Hamas rockets landed in southern Israel.


India

India inks largest-ever defence deal with US


Iraq

A suicide attack outside a Shia shrine in Baghdad killed 35 civilians and wounded 79 more. Iraqi forces detained seven al Qaeda fighters in Baqubah, four al Qaeda fighters in Mosul, four wanted men in Basrah, three more in Haweija, and two more in Daqook.

India’s prime minister asked Pakistan to hand over the suspects of the Mumbai terror attacks. A senior Afghan Taliban spokesman was detained by Pakistani security officials. A suicide bomber killed himself in a failed attack in Bannu. Security forces detained 13 extremists during the operation in Khyber.



Israel

The Israel Defense Force has launched a ground operation into Gaza. “The objective is to destroy the Hamas terror infrastructure in the area of operations,” an IDF spokesman said.
