Iraqi forces detained 25 suspected Soldiers of Heaven members in Babil province and 14 Special Groups fighters in Al Kut. Security forces arrested the Jalawlaa emergency police commander. Coalition forces captured 11 al Qaeda operatives in Baghdad and Mosul. US troops detained five Special Groups fighters in Baghdad. A US soldier was killed in Baghdad.

Somalia

The US Navy has surrounded the hijacked Ukrainian-flagged vessel transporting weapons to Sudan. The secretary of the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia called Shabaab “criminals.” Seven people were killed and 17 wounded during fighting in Mogadishu.



Afghanistan

The Taliban leadership denied it was conducting negotiations with the Afghan government. Gulbuddin Hekmatyar claimed responsibility for an August ambush that killed 10 French soldiers in Kabul province. A US soldier was killed in an attack in eastern Afghanistan.


Algeria

A suicide bomber killed three civilians and wounded six in an attack on a police checkpoint in Dellys. Security forces killed three “terrorists” during an operation in Tebessa. Police have increased the number of checkpoints in Tizi Ouzou.
