A suicide bomber attacked a tribal meeting in Bajaur; 22 tribal members were killed. A suicide attack in Swat killed two paramilitary troops. Nineteen Taliban fighters were killed in airstrikes in Bajaur. The government freed three Taliban prisoners, including Baitullah Mehsud™s deputy, Maulvi Rafiuddin, in exchange for 10 soldiers taken hostage in Hangu district.

Syrian TV shows men ”confessing” to deadly bomb blast

Sheikh Sharif Ahmed stepped down as the leader of the Islamic Courts. Heavy fighting was reported in Mogadishu after Shabaab attacked Somali and Ethiopian army posts. The Islamic Courts banned weapons in Kismayo.


Iraq

Police arrested nine “wanted men” north of Baqubah. Coalition forces captured six al Qaeda operatives in central Iraq, and killed one al Qaeda operative and captured 11 more in Mosul. Six Iraqis were killed and 20 were wounded in a series of bombings in Baghdad.

An airstrike in Badghis province killed 15 Taliban fighters and seven civilians. The attack occurred after Taliban fighters ambushed a joint Afghan and ISAF convoy in the district of Ghormach, a Pashtun pocket in the north. General Petraeus said the Afghan tribes can help with securing the country.

Pakistan

Pakistani jets and artillery killed 11 Taliban fighters in Bajaur. Three Taliban fighters were killed while trying to plant an IED in Swat. The Taliban released 12 children kidnapped in Swat. A runway at the Peshawar airport was damaged in a rocket attack.


Spain

Osama bin Laden’s son, Omar, has lost his bid for asylum in Spain. A government official said Omar did not “meet the conditions necessary for entering Spain.” The UN Refugee Agency recommended against giving Omar asylum.


Iraq

Coalition forces captured 15 al Qaeda operatives during raids throughout Iraq. Iraqi troops detained nine insurgents in Kirkuk and captured three insurgents in Mosul. Four Iraqis were killed and nine wounded in a suicide car bombing in Baghdad. Two Iraqi policemen were killed in Mosul and one was killed in Amarah.

Somalia

Shabaab stoned a 13-year-old girl to death after she was raped. Six French aid workers have been kidnapped in the town of Dhusomarebn. A Somali soldier was killed in an attack in Mogadishu.


Afghanistan

US officials confirmed a US airstrike killed 38 civilians in Kandahar killed civilians. A British soldier was killed during combat in Helmand province. General Petraeus is in Afghanistan for talks and a review of the strategy.


Iran

India blocked a North Korean jet suspected of carrying missile parts to Iran. NATO dismissed Iranian threats to close the Strait of Hormuz as a “fantasy.” Iran warned the US not to violate its airspace.
