Afghanistan

Two Spanish soldiers were killed and one was critically wounding in a suicide attack in Herat. Afghan intelligence officials arrested three suspects behind the kidnapping of a CBC journalist. The kidnapping occurred in Kabul a month ago and was covered up by the media to facilitate negotiations.


Thailand

Violence in the South is rising as the political crisis in Bangkok has diverted attention from the region. Two Muslim terrorists were killed in a shootout in YAla province. Nine Army rangers were wounded in an IED attack in Narathiwat province.





Indonesia

Hundreds of Muslim supporters of Bali bombers Amrozi, Mukhlas, and Imam Samudra clashed with police after their bodies were returned to their families. Rioters shouted “Jihad” as they paraded the bodies through the streets. Hundreds of police were driven from the towns.


United Kingdom

Pakistan

Pakistani forces killed 10 Taliban fighters wearing Frontier Corps uniforms in Swat, 25 fighters in Bajaur, and seven more in Mohmand. Eight civilians were killed by Pakistani military mortar fire in Swat. The Taliban murdered two “US spies” in North Waziristan. The Pakistani government will now refer to the Taliban as “miscreants.”


Afghanistan

Coalition and Afghan forces killed 20 Taliban fighters in Ghazni province, and killed 10 and captured 13 more in Eastern Afghanistan. The Taliban killed the governor of Ghor province in an ambush. Coalition forces captured three Taliban leaders in Uruzgan province.


Somalia

Fighting between Shabaab and Somali and Eithiopian troops north of Mogadishu killed 10 people. Hassan Dahir Aweys rejected the idea of talks to patch up rifts in the Islamic Courts. Pirates seized a Danish cargo ship with a crew of 13.


Iraq

Coalition forces captured 22 al Qaeda operatives throughout Iraq. Iraqi Security Forces captured 14 al Qaeda operatives in northern Iraq, 12 insurgents in Ninewa, an al Qaeda leader in Fallujah, and another leader in Baqubah. Two Iraqi soldiers were killed in Mosul. One US soldier was killed in Baghdad.


Indonesia

Indonesia executed the three convicted members of Jemaah Islamiyah for the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people. Imam Samudra, Amrozi Nurhasyim, and Ali Ghufron were killed this afternoon after appeals for a stay were turned down. The bombings were funded by al Qaeda.

A US strike on a Taliban and al Qaeda camp in North Waziristan killed 14 people. Twenty Taliban were killed in Pakistani airstrikes in Bajaur. One Taliban fighter was killed in a clash with a tribal militia in Swat. Police defused a bomb in a market in Hangu. Anti-Taliban pamphlets were distributed in Mohmand.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb threatened to strike western targets in Algeria and North Africa in its latest videotape. The group cited Western encroachment and “the government’s policy of starving its citizens.” Islamist terrorists kidnapped and then assassinated the mayor of the northern Algerian town of Timezrit.
