Yemen’s appeal court reduced Jaber Elbanah’s 10-year jail term to five years. Elbanah is wanted by the US for providing material support to Al Qaeda and is believed to have helped recruit the Lackawanna Six. A Yemeni court released Elbanah on bail in February 2008.


Somalia

Thirteen people were killed and 35 were wounded during heavy fighting in Mogadishu on Sunday. Two nuns were kidnapped in Kenya and taken across the border into Somalia. A senior government official was shot and killed in Baidoa.


Afghanistan

The Afghan government said US airstrikes killed 14 security guards in Khost; the US military and Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry said the strikes targeted Taliban fighters who attacked a military convoy. The Canadian government denied that it released two Taliban commanders in exchange for a kidnapped CBC reporter.

US forces killed eight extremist from Amar Bil Maroof during hot pursuit into Khyber. Thirteen Taliban fighters were killed in airstrikes in Bajaur. Heavy fighting has been reported between the Taliban and security forces in Mohmand. Security forces killed a journalist in Swat.


Iraq

A female suicide bomber killed three Iraqis in an attack at a hospital in Amiriyat al Fallujah. Three Iraqi soldiers were killed and four were wounded in an IED attack in Mosul. Iraqi troops detained 42 suspected terrorists in Mosul. Coalition forces captured eight al Qaeda operatives in Baghdad, Mosul, and Tikrit.
