Iraqi government plays down arrests of 23 police officers




Somalia

A UN delegation visited Johwar in southern Somalia to address humanitarian and security issues. The new UNSC resolution allows for US air strikes over Somali territory to fight piracy. China is planning to send warships to Somali cost for anti piracy operations.


Pakistan

Al Qaeda operative Omar Saeed Sheikh plotted to kill Pakistan™s former president while serving a jail sentence. Jamaat-e-Islami organized protests to shut down the NATO supply lines. Four engineers were kidnapped at the Torkham border crossing. Police in Mardan broke up a terror ring.




Iraq

Iraqi counterterrorism forces detained 35 members of the Interior Ministry for involvement in a potential coup to restore the Baathist party to power. US and Iraqi forces detained six al Qaeda fighters in Mosul. Iraqi forces detained six insurgents in Kirkuk. Coalition forces captured 12 al Qaeda fighters in raids nationwide.




Afghanistan

Afghan commandos detained a Taliban leader and two aides in Nangarhar province. A British soldier was killed by enemy fire in Helmand province. France’s defense minister denied more French troops will be deployed.

Somalia

The UN has permitted nations to pursue pirates on land in Somalia. Pirates have seized four ships in the Gulf of Aden. Shabaab fighters killed five in attacks on Ethiopian and Africa Union troops in Mogadishu. Shabaab has begun to seize World Food Program supply trucks in Kismayo and ordered the halt of deliveries.


Turkey

Security forces detained 15 al Qaeda suspects during multiple raids in the capital of Istanbul. More raids are expected. Turkey also charged two suspected al Qaeda members for complicity in the attack on the US consulate in Istanbul in July that killed three police officers.


Iraq

Twenty-five Iraqis were killed in dual bombings outside of a police station in eastern Baghdad. Iraqi forces captured 18 wnated men in Basrah, 16 more in Baghdad, and four “criminals” in northwestern Baghdad. Coalition forces killed three al Qaeda operatives and detained 14 more during raids nationwide.


Iran

The US Treasury Department designated Assa Corp as a front company set up by Iran’s Bank Melli, a known proliferator of weapons of mass destruction materials.
