US and Afghan forces killed “a large number of insurgents” in Nangarhar and Paktika provinces. US forces returned fire on a Taliban rocket team inside Pakistan. A suicide bomber killed two policemen and a civilian in Kandahar; an IED attack killed four civilians in Panjwai. China denied it would send troops to Afghanistan.

The Washington Post said the Pakistani government approves of the US airstrikes in the tribal areas; the government denied the report. The Torkham border crossing may reopen to NATO traffic shortly. A tribal leader and 16 Taliban fighters were killed during clashes in Bajaur.


Iraq

Six Iraqis were killed and 15 were wounded in car bombing in Jalawlaa. Three Iraqis were killed and seven were wounded in an IED attack in Baghdad. Coalition forces killed two al Qaeda operatives and captured 10 in raids nationwide. Iraqi forces killed two al Qaeda fighters in Mosul and two more in Diyala.



Afghanistan

President Karzai said he would offer Mullah Omar and other Taliban leaders protection if they return to Afghanistan for peace negotiation. Islamic Courts fighters arrested and whipped 32 dancers just south of Mogadishu. Three Somalis were killed during fighting north of Mogadishu. Fighting between Islamic Courts members broke out again in Jowhar. Somalia’s president said the Transitional Federal Government has collapsed.
